Cannot include in-text references

Hi.
I have used the double (( command to start a reference in-text but cannot get the text to be highlighted in blue and underlined. As soon as I hit CTRL ENTER the reference is moved to the next line as a standalone bullet point.
I noticed that instead of the search icon I always get a folder icon when insterting (( command. Is there a way to get back to the search icon?
