Help, my Daily Documents are out of order and a "Timestamp" Rem has appeared in the folder

Hi all! My Daily Documents have gotten mixed up and a power-up Rem called “Timestamp” has appeared in my Daily Documents folder, I don’t know what’s happening!

A couple days ago I noticed that a few months of Daily Documents had vanished, and now today some of them have reappeared in the wrong place…

Here are some photos: this is the August 2020 area of my Daily Documents, and the August days are coloured purple - but then October and November have just appeared after the 20th of August… then above them you see a Rem called “Timestamp”, and then August continues from the 21st onwards…

Does anybody know what’s happening and how I can fix it? I’m scared to delete the “Timestamp” Rem in case I break something else…

Hey @Stuart, it’s really unfortunate that you ran into this mess. RemNote generally behaves consistently, unless someone tried to push it. However, that’s on us, and we intend to make sure these occurrences become as rare as possible.

It sure seems like the issue might be account related, the timestamp method used to how Daily docs were arranged very early last year, but subsequent introduction of power ups changed that behaviour (at least publicly), and one shouldn’t be able to see the timestamp power-up.

Could you confirm one thing? Is there a duplicate daily document folder lying somewhere?
What exactly made this happen? Was it the import from Roam or something else?

The Timestamp is a slot part of the Daily Document powerup to store the actual day of a Daily Document. You can not delete that. But you can just hide it with /Hide from Document if you want. I think it should be hidden by default just like the Status slot of Todos.

Daily Documents should be sorted by that Timestamp value using the #Automatically Sort power up. This is a pro feature, but there might be an exception for Daily Documents. Can you confirm that @Karthikk ?

The data loss seems like separate issue. Do you know if there are still Daily Documents missing? Note that there is no Daily Document if you did not create one for that day.

Thanks for taking the time @hannesfrank

I’m so confused about all this… it’s quite a mess…

So, reading your response, if the Timestamp is a slot of the Daily Document that’s always been there, why did it suddenly appear now? And why is it sitting between a mixed up 14th of December and 21st of August??

Secondly, you mentioned the Status slot of Todos, so I checked, and they’re there too… should they not be??

D’you think this is all connected as part of a larger problem?

I’m quite new to RemNote and I don’t know much about all this stuff. I journaled in Roam Research for 8 or 9 months before switching everything over to RemNote.

Thirdly, and finally, though, the data loss is the messiest and most confusing part!! The Daily Documents page is all jumbled up (the dates are not in order) so it’s really hard to know if a date is missing, or simply somewhere else in the page… It’s taking me ages, but I started checking all of the days in the Daily Documents page since August 2020 (pretty much every date should have a page), and there were lots of seemingly random pages missing…

That’s as far as I’ve checked so far…

Strangely though, when I search for them, I usually find the page! It does exist, and it does have its Document and Daily Document tags - it’s just not appearing in the Daily Documents page. Furthermore, when I do find it, it then suddenly appears in the Daily Documents page… but not necessarily in the correct place. For example, the 3rd of October 2020 was missing so I searched for it and found that it does still exist - it then suddenly appeared in the Daily Documents page at the very bottom, underneath the 22nd of August 2019!

What could be going on with this Daily Documents page??

Unfortunately, I can’t find any trace of the pages from March 2020… it’s looking like those have perhaps been completely lost

Any help would be greatly appreciated… this is all so important to me, and I’m going crazy trying to figure out what’s gone wrong.

Cheers,
Stuart

Yes @hannesfrank you are right, it most certainly should be an exception.

Maybe related to expiration of the pro trial/subscription? Otherwise it sounds account specific and you could open a support ticket (though the support is currently quite overloaded).

I meant they are not visible on a todo instance = a rem with a checkbox, just like the Timestamp is not visible on a #Daily Document. I guess you are right that it showing up on the Daily Documents page is normal.

In general it is pretty unlikely that RemNote loses stuff. Usually they are just misplaced somehow. Maybe they are just hidden in your case? Here 2 documents are hidden.

Can you click on the Title (Daily Document) and Ctrl + Down?

I have previous experience with jumbled dates in the daily documents page and you can read more about it here and see if it helps: 'Automatically Sort' powerup does not work on dates · Issue #1047 · remnoteio/remnote-issues · GitHub

My conclusion at the moment is, not to mess with the native settings of the page, layout , format etc. If there are anything on it that’s not default, change it back. In your case, I can only suggest removing the “Automatically Sort” powerup at the top and let it reset/reappear/return on its own again. This seems to be one of the things I did to get it back to normal.

Hi @Karthikk! Thanks for taking the time

In response to your first message:

  1. The Timestamp Rem still shows at the bottom of the Daily Documents page - should I do something about that?

  2. Nope, there’s no duplicate Daily Documents folder that I can find!

  3. I’m really not sure what made this all happen! It wasn’t the import from Roam Research though - I imported it all about a month a half ago, and have been learning how to use RemNote ever since. The Daily Documents page has been properly organised until about a week ago. Recently, I’ve been spending time going through every single Daily Document and shaping up the syntax to suit RemNote (and delete old Roam-specific stuff), and turning everything into RemNote flashcards etc. Then, about a week ago, when I was still working my through August 2020, I updated to the latest version of RemNote and perhaps that caused an error, or perhaps I did something wrong, and suddenly about 6 or so months’ worth of Daily Documents disappeared, the Timestamp Rem appeared, and the order of the Daily Documents page went crazy. I’m still in process of putting everything back in order and shaping everything up to fit RemNote… it’s looking a lot better now, but I’m worried this might happen again

Thanks for your time

Me again,

I wonder if my problems are connected to the other strange things that my RemNote does - like it’s very slow and laggy when I’m in the Daily Documents folder, it always boots up on a “404 - Page Not Found” page, and it often crashes

Also, many of my pages don’t look the same as those in the RemNote tutorial YouTube videos: for example my Todo is empty except for some powerup Rems, and RemNote crashes if I touch them to look at their links. RemNote also cannot go ‘back’ or ‘forward’, I’m just taken to the 404 page again - does that happen for everyone else too?

I don’t mind these quirks, I’m getting used to it all, but perhaps there’s something else wrong with my RemNote?

Has anybody else who’s tried to switch from Roam to RemNote experienced this? Maybe it’s related…

Cheers
