How to Merge documents? (select all, cut and paste into second doc)

Hi,
I had been working on a document and have a few Rems created there. Today, I imported from Workflowy and have a longer document on the same topic from there. So, I’d like to merge both contents into a single document. In other words, I want to select all the Rems in my earlier document, cut and paste it into my imported document. How do I achieve that? (Select all Rems, copy and paste into another document is not working for me.)

Kind regards,
Brindha

Actually it should just work like you described

  • Copy&Paste: Select (Ctrl + A or Shift + arrow up/down), Copy (Ctrl + C) or Cut (Ctrl + X) and Paste (Ctrl + V).

Here are two more methods you could try:

  • Merge: There is a dedicated merge function. Either use the slash command /merge or Ctrl + Shift + Alt + E. This puts all children of the current page into the selected page and deletes the current page.

  • Move: Select the Rems you want to move and press Ctrl + Shift + M. (This creates a portal to the target location at the old place which you can delete savely.)

Thank you very much for your swift reply.

Sadly, I seem to have further issues with copy paste.

  1. When I Ctrl + A against a rem, only that one rem gets selected. This I can copy and paste in another document with the code block intact. Pressing Ctrl+A twice selects all, but upon copying(Ctrl +C) it doesn’t paste anything into the new document. In the parent document, the status bar displays the number selected. But I am unable to Ctrl + V paste it in the destination document. I found that if I instead right click and select “Paste as plain text”, I’m able to paste the text now, but it doesn’t paste the code blocks properly.

1a. Even this Ctrl + A twice to select all, doesn’t work in all documents. Even where does, it only selects upto the immediate outer indented list item, not the entire page contents.
1b. I found Shift + down arrow from any outer intended list item selects all but it too exhibits the same behaviour as 1a.

  2. When I select the rems in a page and accidentally click anywhere else on the page outside the selected rems, I get a error page. The error message is " TypeError: Cannot read property ‘selectedRangePortal’ of undefined."

  3. While merge and move options work, there are instances when I want to create a backup version of my document with just copy and paste. Is there another way to create backup version? Is there a “save as” option?

Sorry for a longer reply. Many thanks for your help.

Try opening the documents in different panes (shift click on bullet), selecting the rem with mouse drag, and moving them by grabbing one of the bullets to the other pane.

Thank you for your reply. I did as you suggested, but it results in the MOVE action and not a COPY action. When I drag contents across the panes, its no longer present in the parent document. My requirement is unfortunately not to move, but to copy all the rems across.

Hold up, in your OP you said cut and paste, which is the definition of move. Another option is to create a portal which you can do by holding alt when dragging - the portal lets you edit the original contents and the original contents will show that they link through a portal to some other rem.
