I’d love to know more about how RemNote came to be. What’s the MIT connection? Who is bankrolling this? Is there any competition/collaboration with other zettelkasten tools (open source or otherwise)?
I have a very similar post (link below).
Would be best to keep similar topics together, to make sure there’s a clear place to discuss it. What do you think?
Not sure if it’s possible to merge posts in this forum though…
Way I see it, this subforum is the place to get info about the RemNote as a product and the Community Q and A is for (appropriately enough) sharing info about using it between community members, so I’m hoping this topic will get the wanted response and can be closed or pinned as moderators want. Obviously, it doesn’t really matter which one gets answered.
they’ve kept it a secret maybe? Maybe Martin is crazy rich and also a good person altogether. or maybe someone found remnote groundbreaking and funded everything. Anything is possible. Lets see how remnote answers this…
I have done my own research and this is what I have found.
-@Martin Schnieder is a remnote programmer (aka mfranzs on github). His little active Twitter account says “MIT” without giving much information, although in Github it says that his location is Cambridge, so until he confirms otherwise it seems an implausible fact.
-Then there are the brothers Matty Kenny (aka @ mattygrov) and @ Michael_Kenny. Of them it is easier to know because they are the most mediatic. They have a YouTube channel and a website, describing themselves as “cofounders of RemNote.”
-@hannesfrank also has a few commits in the Github repo “remnote issues” and is by far the most active user of this forum. But of these four people he is the only one who does not have the role of moderator in the forum, so I have no idea what his role is in remnote.
Honestly, the web content produced by Mike and Matty has left me very concerted. For example, in May they released a video about “Best FREE NOTE TAKING APP for iPad Pro 2020” and they didn’t even mention remnote. Also, I don’t think they are developers, because Mike works as a doctor and Matty is a medical student, and they have many ventures as you can read on their website.
For all this a suspicion that I have is that Mike and Matty are people with resources who are financing the development of Remnote carried out by Martin Schnieder (and perhaps HannesFrank as well?).
Anyway, I hope you are not bothered by the information that I have put, I have only joined what is public on the internet, and as users we would like to know a little about who is behind this great idea of remnote, how it came about, how you work, how you met, etc.
Haha, I am humbled that I made it on the list. I am not a dev though. I am just a user. I study computer science so I can code. I made a few plugins and CSS snippets, I am active on Discord and Discourse - and I fixed a typo in the Readme of the Issue tracker. Nothing more.
Here is another piece for your puzzle:
Martin is a super nice person, he took much time to answer many of my questions privately on Discord and Discourse. You can see on his Github activity heatmap that he is very actively developing a “private repo” (which is RemNote), almost every single day.
Wow, in that case thank you very much for your contributions! I hope that many more people like you join. Apparently Martin is the only developer.
I would like to know what is the relationship that @mattygrov and @Michael_Kenny have with Martín and Remnote in general.
We would love to publish the full details eventually! For now, here are the origins of RemNote in a nutshell:
Martin was a student at MIT and built RemNote initially as an academic project.
The 4 founders (Martin, Moritz, Mike and Matty) officially formed the RemNote startup this year. Martin and Moritz are the developers and designers, and Mike and Matty are the content and marketing.
P.S. your name must start with an “M” to be eligible to work at RemNote
Yes, it is possible, but to merge topics.
Then why not rename to M-note (or em-Note)
haha because it was supposed to be a secret
What about Moritz? If you hadn’t mentioned him, I wouldn’t know of his existence. He doesn’t even have an account on the forum haha
Haha, he’s working on design ui/ux. He is behind the scenes but will come around more if he’s comfortable. check out his resources library: https://www.notion.so/Learning-Library-2ecb646b5e1e4d5c8274c73c3fbb2541
P.S. your name must start with an “M” to be eligible to work at RemNote
Hey! My name is Mariano. I’m eligible!
