Problem when typing chemical formulas on LATEX

When Im typing an ion , example: Ca2+, when I try to place the charge on top using latex only the number goes on top but for some reason the + just wont , what im i doing wrong?

RemNote also supports Chemical Formula with \ce

This is the way LaTex works. To group the 2+ inside the ^ you can do the following:

Ca^{2+}
