Syncing a local only knowledge base to mobile, not through remnote's syncing

This is a follow up to: Privacy; Zero knowledge encryption; Local only datastore

Awesome that you can create local only knowledge bases and encrypt them. Is there a plan to support this on mobile? In other words, if I want to use my own methods to encrypt / sync a “local only” knowledge base to my mobile device, will I be able to point a mobile app to the location of that knowledge base on my phone, similar to what the desktop apps allow?

@aditya You use the mobile app, what do you think/know about this?
@Karthikk @ognsya Doesn’t this smell like a feature request?

Yeah, I think it would need to be added as a feature. Right now you could sync the backup folder, but that’s not the same thing as actual syncing…

Personally I wouldn’t be interested on that, since I don’t think RemNote is usable on mobile as it is now.

Also, implementing that type of syncing would probably demand a lot of work. Meanwhile we still lack several features that I consider are much more essential (being able to search for more than one term, for example).

From what I understand, what OP asks for looks a lot like the type of system Anytype.io is doing - no cloud, pure p2p (they’re still in Alpha though, very early in development).

Not yet. As @ognsya said:

It’s a good thing as a request. I suggest you keep it in your to-do list, and make a feature request on this topic which you will be reminded later to promote to everyone.
I think what you’re saying is a way to treat knowledgebases like files. Interesting concept, but the “file” is gonna be troublesome (either very large or too many crumbs to deal with).
But thanks for the concept @will !
:grinning:

Thanks @Spondon Yes I can see how that could be quite a complex undertaking (and one that probably won’t make sense for a while). If my last comment changes your mind on that, let me know.

Otherwise, I’ll do some more thinking about this and put up a feature request. Although, I am inclined to make a more general request in case others have a better approach. What I am asking for on a more fundamental level is the ability to move local knowledge bases between a desktop and mobile device. But, I have very little opinion on how to do that. This just seemed like it might be a way…

@ognsya I have to disagree. I used the mobile app nearly every day to go through my queue when I was on an android with minimal issues (and now I use the site via browser on ios). Perhaps the other “side” of the app - the rem taking / creation / searching still needs work but I think that the mobile app already provides some real, usable functionality; at least it has for me.

Also, if you are referring to my implementation of the syncing when you mention that the syncing would take a lot of work, I was not going to build it but rather use a zero knowledge encryption cloud service such as https://tresorit.com to get the export up to my phone. Or were you referring to some sort of syncing that remnote would build?

In any case, what I was requesting is just the ability to import from a local “backup” as is already possible on desktop. Basically a mobile version of the below. Perhaps that’s more work than it seems / will add value for too few people to make sense right now.

Ah, ok! I should have been more specific. I don’t use RemNote’s cards/learning features. I just use it as my personal knowledge base. That’s the only way I attempted to use the mobile app.

Happy to know it works well for going through the queue. Must be very useful for studying.
