What are some of the mistakes you have made as you started to use RemNote?

As I started out using RemNote, I didn’t really have a clue what this was all about. Everything I knew was that I can create flashcards with “::”.

I only learned how to use some of the rather advanced features (portals, cloze cards, list cards…) on the go.

Because of this, my database got a bit messy over time. Maybe we can gather some of the " main mistakes" here that people tend to make when starting out with using RemNote.

My main mistakes were:

  • making way too many Cards (I literally put “::” behind every sentence I found interesting, but couldn’t revise my cards regularly)
  • making the flashcards too long with too much information
  • not using portals from the beginning on (now I have several rems that contain actually the same information and it’s a lot of work to merge them all)

What were the main mistakes that you’d like to tell others so that they don’t fall into the same trap?

That’s a good idea. Two off the top of my head now:
1. Careful with what you paste into RemNote! Sometimes the text can contain characters which are meaningful for RemNote, which potentially leads to the automatic creation of (possibly dozens or hundreds) undesirable Rem/Tags. Maybe would be a good idea to have some sort of warning whenever this happens.
2. Don’t worry too much about structure before you add your content. Sometimes it makes more sense to add stuff and shuffle things around as you go. Gradually some order should emerge naturally. It’s much easier and more fun this way too.
